Uterine
Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are among the most common
tumors found in women, usually appearing during the childbearing
years. These fibroids are also called leiomyomas, fibromyomas,
or myomas, and are not indicated as an increased risk for
uterine cancer. While as many as three out of four women
have fibroids, most are totally unaware of them.
Some common symptoms that may indicate
the presence of uterine fibroids include pelvic pressure
or pain, heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, and backache.
The type of symptom you experience is determined by the
location of the fibroid. If it is located inside the uterus,
you are most likely to experience heavy, prolonged menstrual
bleeding. If it bulges from the back of the uterus, it
can press against nerves causing backache.
New Options for Treating Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids can range in size from tiny microscopic
specs to huge masses that can consume and stretch the uterus.
If you are experiencing any signs such as continued pelvic
pain, excessive bleeding, or difficulty with urination,
you should see your doctor for an examination. If you are
diagnosed with uterine fibroids, there is a great alternative
to invasive surgery.
